Christopher T. Karounos came to Herten Burstein with experience in
complex commercial litigation, employment litigation and large
corporate bankruptcy matters. He began his legal career by serving
as law clerk to the Honorable Menelaos W. Toskos, J.S.C., in the
Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Bergen County. Mr.
Karounos presently practices in the areas of commercial, business
and civil litigation, alternate dispute resolution and liquor
license law. He is also a trained mediator, listed by the Supreme
Court of New Jersey on its roster of mediators. Mr. Karounos received his J.D. in 2006 from the Rutgers University School of Law-Newark, with a concentration in trial practice, and a graduate certificate in alternate dispute resolution. He was awarded the Myron Harkavy prize as outstanding Trial Attorney of the graduating class, and was named as 2005 Trial Scholar by the Trail Attorneys of New Jersey (TANJ). While in law school Mr. Karounos served as a senior editor for the Rutgers Law Journal and represented the law school as a member of its National Mock Trial Team in 2005 and 2006. Mr. Karounos previously served as a legal intern for the Federal Public Defenders Office in Newark. While in law school, he also volunteered as a mediator for the Bergen County Superior Court. Prior to launching a career in law, Mr. Karounos worked in the hospitality management industry for over twenty years. He owned and operated several restaurants, nightclubs and catering facilities throughout New York and New Jersey. His extensive experience in contract and lease negotiations and hands-on operations, and knowledge of the day-to-day tribulations of running multiple businesses enables him to provide focused advice to the firm’s business clients with the added perspective of an owner/operator. An Arthur T. Vanderbilt Inn of Court Graduate, Mr. Karounos served as a Barrister during the 2005 to 2007 and the 2007 to 2009 sessions. In addition to his role as a Civil Trial Inn Barrister, he hones his trial advocacy skills and provides instruction to young attorneys and law students by continuing to serve as a coach for Rutgers Law School’s National Mock Trial Team, a position he has held since 2007. Since October of 2006, Mr. Karounos has conducted lectures and seminars on trial advocacy and courtroom technique for the Rutgers Law School Moot Court Board. Mr. Karounos is a member of the American and New Jersey State Bar Association Litigation and Business Law Sections as well as a member of the Bergen County Bar Association. He is also an officer of the Hellenic American Bar Association. Mr. Karounos is admitted to practice before the United States District Court, District of New Jersey and the New Jersey Superior Court. |
