DEADLINE FOR NJ PAID FAMILY LEAVE NOTICE TO
EMPLOYEES IS RAPIDLY APPROACHING

Dear Clients and Friends:

The mandate requiring notice to employees of the New Jersey Paid Family Leave Act is rapidly approaching. Notice of the Act must be given to employees no later than December 15th.

Governor Corzine signed the Paid Family Leave Act into law on May 2, 2008. The law provides employees with up to six weeks of paid time off to care for a sick family member or bond with a newborn baby. This is in addition to paid time off already provided for a worker's own disability. The program is funded through an additional payroll tax on employees, who would be eligible for a maximum benefit of $546 per week in 2009. The law requires employers to begin withholding the tax on January 1, 2009 while employees will not be eligible to apply for benefits until July 1, 2009.

If you have any questions regarding the New Jersey Paid Family Leave Act or any other labor and employment law matter, please do not hesitate to contact Steven Harz, Esq. at (201) 342-6000, or via email at sharz@hertenburstein.com
